What's Actually in Each Blend
The core difference comes down to one ingredient: bergamot. Everything else about how each tea tastes flows from that single addition.
English Breakfast
A blend of black teas only — typically Assam, Ceylon, and Kenyan, sometimes with Chinese black tea too. No added flavouring of any kind, just the natural character of the leaves themselves.
Earl Grey
A black tea base (traditionally Chinese keemun or Ceylon) infused with oil pressed from the rind of the bergamot orange — a citrus fruit grown almost exclusively in Calabria, southern Italy.

The Story Behind the Name Isn't Quite True
Earl Grey is named after Charles Grey, the 2nd Earl Grey, who served as British Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834. The popular legend says he was gifted the recipe by a grateful Chinese official — but tea historians widely agree this is almost certainly a romanticised myth, since bergamot wasn't known to be used in China at that time. The more likely explanation is simply that a British tea merchant experimented with bergamot oil on an existing black tea blend, and the result became fashionable enough to stick. English Breakfast, by contrast, has a much less dramatic — and less clearly documented — history, emerging gradually as a standard robust morning blend rather than being tied to any single person or event.
Milk or No Milk?
This comes down to personal taste, but there's a reason for the traditional pairing.
English Breakfast
Robust and malty enough to hold its own against milk — this is the classic "builder's tea" pairing.
Earl Grey
Often taken plain or with lemon, since milk can mute the delicate bergamot aroma — though many still enjoy it with a splash.
Try Both for Yourself
The only real way to know which one wins your mornings is to taste them side by side.
